Sea-Glass

Sea-glass, when you were a bottle did you feel a sense of purpose?  People would drink from you and you served them well.  Did you feel part of a collective whole?  Or did you feel restrained, as if you were obligated to do what all the other pieces were doing?  Did you ever think you would become a unique treasure of your own?

Sea-glass, when you were shattered and left with sharp edges, how did you feel?  Did you feel broken or free?  When people would walk around you saying “watch out for that piece of glass,” did you feel betrayed? Abandoned?

Sea-glass, when you were swept out into the ocean did you feel lost and hopeless, or a sense of wonder?  When you were being tumbled around did you ever think the tumbling would stop?  Did you know you were beauty in the making?  Did you fear where you would end up?

Sea-glass, when your edges smoothed did you feel relief?  Did you learn from your journey?  Did you feel like you were evolving into something brand new?

Sea-glass, when you were first pushed upon an unknown shore, were you scared?  Or did you sigh and relax into the sunrays that casted themselves upon you?  Did it take you time to adjust to the new elements?

Sea-glass, when people picked you up, and put you down, did you ever think the perfect person would come around?  Did you forgive the people who shattered you, because they are the ones who made you the treasure you are?  Did you find love for the ocean who tumbled your edges away?  Did you find peace on the sandy shorelines of each of your stays?

Sea-glass, did you ever think you would end up in a person’s hands again after being released from your bottle form?  Did you think you would be seen as a memory that brings smiles to families?  Did you think that you would be worn as jewelry?  Did you ever think that people would walk along the beach just looking for you?

Sea-glass, did you ever think you would be so rare?  So boundless?  So tenacious?  So courageous?  So elegant?

Sea-glass, it’s funny because I am just like you…

Thank you for sharing your beautiful words about broken glass. I haven't ever spent a lot of time at the ocean, so I first learned about sea glass in 2015 during a trip to Prince Edward Island in Canada. I have a necklace made using a piece of sea glass. I will look at it differently now. Thanks for the inspiration.
