Welcome to our annual Deaf Community Surf Day!!!

Why do we host this day?
This is a community near and dear to Laurel Harrington's (founder of The Ocean Is My Guru) heart. Here is what Laurel has to say... "My mom is deaf. She wears two hearing aids, is fluent in American Sign Language, and is helped immensely by her speech-reading skills. Growing up, I had no idea how many challenges she faced day to day simply because our culture is unfortunately not designed in a way that provides equal opportunity for those with hearing loss. As I grew more mature, my mom and I became closer, she's one of my best friends. One thing that I have become aware of is the lack of opportunities people with hearing loss have amongst our society, this makes me cry just typing it, from jobs to community, from education to transportation, not to mention recreational activities, group classes, or even a casual trip to a local outing... think about it. All-in-all my mom is a heroine, she has learned not only how to navigate in this society, but she helps so many others do the same. Inspired by her to create this event, she reminds me, "what others see as limitations, could be our greatest gifts." I love you Mom."
